New culture in my home
Hey everyone! just started this, and trying to get used to it. Thanks klo!!! Anyways i just wanted to share something that has been happening to me these past few days. I have living with me a girl from Thailand (i hope thats how its spelled!). She is just staying at my house until tuesday. When i first heard about this girl, who is actually 25 years old, i was kind of scared of meeting her. i mean think about it, you are going to be hosting a person who knows the same vocabulary as a two year old, if not less. The lack of communication was going to be horrible. Her background is as follows: graduated from university with a BA in Managment, worked 12 hour shifts for $100 a month, which apparently in thailand, its really good pay and decided she needed to find a better life and came down to America with her uncle who happens to be my father's best friend. When she got to America she was informed that she was going to have to stay for two years before going back to her homeland, she was only supposed to stay for a month . The first time i saw her was the day she came in, right after she had just received this news. Her eyes where bloodshot and the tears just kept streaming down her face. The only thing she said to me was "call home, sad" then bowed and went on talking with her family. this is when i found out what happened. I suddenly felt so bad and heartbroken for this girl. It reminded me of when i first moved to Florida although i had my bestfriend here and i was staying with my fahter i still felt very lonley, so i could only imagin what it felt like for her to be in a place where no one was familiar as was not the language. To make a long story short, it has been very interesting. We went out to EPCOT, the car ride was really quiet and i thought the day was going to be unbearable. As we drove into the parking you see "Spaceship Earth" the great big ball that says EPCOT on the side. "LA" the girl's name shakes my hand and says "this" pointing to such ball. I look at her and say "EPCOT, we go in ball," mind everything is said with great hand gestures while driving a moving automobile. Going through the entrance brought a smile to my face as i saw her face light up and say "PICTURE!" not to spaceship earth but to all the flowers that where in fron t of it! The most simplest things made this girl very happy. Our conversation was very limited considering we only had a ten word vocabulary to deal with. Can you believe we spent the whole day laughing, joking, and sharing pictures and drivers lic. with eachother! which only makes me believe that people are capable of understanding eachother even if there is a language barrier or just a total different culture. It you don't understan its just because you don't give it or yourself a fair try. And believe me the only thing i know how to say is Thai is water! We spent the whole day showing each other words in our language. She says im her Teacher! When she want's to know how to say something she says "Speak English" and points to what she wants me to say, its really fun. Well just wanted say a little of what has been going on in my life.
